Benjamin Hak Fung CHAIO

Benjamin obtained his BBA and MSc in Economics in the HKUST, and his PhD from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Benjamin is now serving as Founding President of the Alumni Association of HKUST in Shanghai.

“I am deeply grateful to the professors at HKUST. They opened my eyes and convinced me to become a professor. If you want to study abroad, please do not be mistaken that the best academic works are necessarily in the West. There are pros and cons of the differences about doing research in China and elsewhere. When I face difficulties in life, I always look back and think about the good days and sea breeze at HKUST. I am organizing alumni activities in Shanghai to serve HKUST and the society.”

 

Benjamin is currently the Assistant Dean (Director of Development) of the Institute for Advanced Research, and Associate Professor in the School of Economics at the Shanghai University of Finance and Economics (SUFE). He the Special Representative of the Office for the Vice President of Development of Michigan. Before entering SUFE, he was Assistant Professor in the Department of Applied Economics and the Department of Management Science and Information Systems at the Peking University Guanghua School of Management, and Research Scientist/Director of Operations at New York University. He teaches UC, MSc, and PhD courses and was voted “Star Professor” by MBA students in the College of Business in SUFE.

Besides being an expert in network economics, internet management and anti-spam economic mechanisms, he also organized other talents to solve the poverty and education problems. He is from Shantou and now the Executive Deputy Head of the Shanghai Doctoral Alliance of Teochew Descendants, and member of the Board of Directors of the International Teochew Doctors Association.

He also helps the earthquake-stricken areas and the less fortunate, through Sichuan Teachers and Deputy Secretary General (China Area) of Mutual Help International. He goes to serve in the hospitals regularly.
