CUI, Yunpeng, 2nd yr Economics and Finance student, is part of a team of 7 students that have just won the 2014-2015 President’s Cup Gold Award. The ‘7’ are from both sides of the strait and from different majors, yet, all are at their second year of study and under the same student organization “WILL HKUST”. Will originally has 8 members, Mohamed Wassim Mehouachi, is a former member of this project but left UST last in 2014.
They competed against 27 other groups of 3rd or 4th students who presented their Final Year Projects. Their project “Real-time Display of Machine Status” aims at helping students to check if the laundry machines are available without being there physically. Prof. David Rossiter, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, is the supervisor of the team.
Their project uses simple technology to apply on daily usage. They use vibration sensor to detect the vibration of the washing machines and data are collected by a local computer, which is installed in the corner of the laundry room. Two programs of this local computer analyse the data, showing which washing machine is available, and upload it to their website. The data is updating every 5 seconds so users can check the status of the washing machines almost at real time. (http://ihome.ust.hk/~ikao). After some adjustment, it is possible that the system will be installed in the laundry rooms permanently.
As a business student, Yunpeng’s role in this project includes market research, promotion administration, report writing and presentation for the President’s Cup. He also participated drafting the application form for GCE Student Initiated & Organised Projects (SIOP) Fund for this team and successfully got the award.
Yunpeng enjoys working with the other members and he learned a lot from them. The award came as an absolute encouragement for the ‘7’ and they plan to add more functions to the existing project to help the HKUST community.
